In Memoriam

Being part of the writing community, it is so upsetting to hear of authors that died tragically at their own hands. These are just a few of my own favorite writers who died under these tragic circumstances.

Ernest Hemingway (July 21, 1899- July 2, 1961)

Such works that Ernest has brought us include The Sun Also Rises, The short Stories, Death in the Afternoon, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and last but not least The Old Man and the Sea. There is much more than the list includes, but one thing concluded was that he was a well developed and appreciated author. Some would argue that he had strengthened the short story genre. Unfortunately, Ernest took his own life by shooting himself with his most beloved shotgun. Medical records were released, showing he had been diagnosed with hemochromatosis. A genetic disease that caused an inability to metabolize iron leading to mental and physical decay. There is a small population that believes that this was the cause for his suicide.

Hunter S. Thompson (July 18, 1937- February 20, 2005)

Dr. Thompson himself, founder of Gonzo Journalism. By definition, Gonzo Journalism is where the reporter showcasing the story is part of it. Contrary to previously where reporters would direct the narrative in a third person perspective. Hunter had several novels, including Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Rum Diary, Screw-jack, Hell’s Angels, and various others. Being known for his erratic behavior and daily drug intake, Thompson was nothing short of controversial. Like Ernest, Hunter had died the same way. Committing suicide via self inflicted gunshot wound. Many argue whether it was the pain he had in his hips from a recent surgical procedure, or that it was a long time coming for the writer.

Virginia Woolf (January 25, 1882- March 28, 1941)

Being originally born with the name Adeline Virginia Stephen, she accomplished various works of literature. All of which stemmed from her drive to read the books in her Father’s library. Since she was denied the formal education available to only males. That did not stop her, as she later helped find what would be called the “Bloomsbury Group”. Dedicating their time to discuss politics and art. Known publications written by Virginia include Night and Day, The Mark on the Wall, Mrs. Dalloway, and The Years. Leaving the legacy to inspire future intellectual women and future women writers. Her death was said to be a result from her fourth accountable breakdown in her life. Virginia filled her coat pockets with heavy rocks and went to River Ouse, in the United Kingdom. There she jumped into the water and drowned herself.

There are many other writers/artists that have had tragic suicides/deaths. All being sad and a very delicate subject for the families affected. In addition, the fans also feel deeply for the ends of these artists. What is important is to acknowledge them and know them, so we do not forget them.

Thank you for taking the time to read my work.
